Junkyard Reef

Crystal Dive's very own custom built artificial reef located 400m off Mae Haad beach, designed and built in conjunction with Nathan Cook and our environmental partners Eco Koh Tao.

Work started in 2009 to construct the site, the idea a very simple one, any junk that wouldn’t harm the environment would be placed down to give fish a new home.

Junkyard is an excellent dive site for all divers whether it be novices on their first diving experience or for more experienced divers looking for a dive with a difference.

Junkyard is a shallow site with depth at 10-12m depending on tide, visibility ranges from 5-20m varying throughout the seasons.

Junkyard Reef - 12 Months On

My first day back on Koh Tao in 8 months. I'm not sure what I was expecting but I certainly wasn't expecting what I saw...." read more >>>

Junkyard Reef, Koh Tao

The site itself is relatively small but a short swim towards the coast is coral reef, making this site a perfect drop off point for divers wishing to swim ashore instead of a boat journey.

As the name suggests the site is made up from all sorts of junk; toilets, gym equipment, tents, a car and a replica of the Sydney harbour bridge have all found their way to the site.

Over recent time Eco Koh Tao has made various structures on which coral has been planted and has been a great success as a coral nursery.

Plenty of fish have now inhabited this site contributing to its success; it has become a haven for a diverse selection of marine life.

Different species of pufferfish and porcupinefish use the nooks and cranny’s to hide in.

Juvenile Batfish school around the taller structures for protection while goatfish use the structures as resting station before heading back to the sand to find some food.

Three Saddleback Anemofish (Nemo) families live on the dive site using their anemone to hide in from potential predators.

A timid Yellow Box fish can be found scuttling in between the benches or under the tent which lies next to the tower of power.

Construction of new structures and fresh eco projects from our partners at Eco Koh Tao are a constant all year round. If you wish to lend a hand and get involved you can always ask at Crystal Dive to see when and what the next project is.
