Let’s take a closer look at each step in detail....

We start the PADI Open water diver course at 1pm every day. To begin with your Instructor will conduct a course orientation.

Starting with some introductions before informing you of the course schedule and asking you to complete some paperwork including the PADI Medical Statement.

Knowledge Development

The Knowledge Development section of the PADI Open Water diver course consists of a series of videos, short Instructor led knowledge review sessions and 4 multiple choice 10 question quizzes.

There are 5 modules in total. The final module finishes with a 50 question multiple choice exam.

  • PADI Open Water Diving Course

The subjects covered include scuba equipment, safe dive practices, effects of pressure underwater, the buddy system and basic decompression theory.

You will also learn about dive planning using PADI’s Recreational Dive Planner (RDP) and we will teach you how dive computers work. This will enable you to safely plan your dives, and keep to your dive profile during each dive.

The knowledge development is conducted over 2 days; afternoon of day 1 and the morning of day 3.

Confined Water Training

ALL our confined water training sessions are conducted in one of our purpose built swimming pools. The very definition of confined water training means a swimming pool is without doubt the best place to conduct these sessions both from a safety and comfort perspective.

  • PADI Open Water Diving Course

We’ll start in very shallow water gradually getting deeper (no more than three meters) as your confidence increases.

Your instructor will demonstrate skills which you will practice back, designed to get you comfortable using scuba gear.

Scuba skills will include:
• Equipment Assembly
• Pre dive safety checks
• Mask & regulator clearing
• Alternative Air source Use
• Buoyancy control
• Communicating and hand signals
• Descents and Ascents

Special Attention!

Don’t settle for anything less than the best. Some dive centers may tell you that it’s best to complete confined water in the ocean.

On a perfect day, completing some aspects of confined water in a shallow bay can be fun and exciting but when you are breathing from scuba for the first time, naturally feeling a little apprehensive and nervous, and being asked to complete skills such as removing and replacing the mask or regulator underwater, the guaranteed calm and clear conditions a swimming pool offers is necessary.

  • PADI Open Water Diving Course

Shallow bays are not ideal if there is any wind, waves, poor visibility or other environmental conditions that will negatively affect the safety or comfort of either student or Instructor.

And here on Koh Tao, with lots of snorkelers in the water, lots of small boats using the beach to drop snorkelers off the numerous interruptions are not conducive to teaching beginners scuba.

Both our swimming pools are purpose built for scuba diving and offer you the best possible start on your way to becoming a PADI Open Water diver. Don’t settle for anything less than the best.

Choose PADI. Choose Crystal Dive.

Open Water Training Dives

Now time for the best bit! Your first Open water dives will allow you to put everything you have learnt over the previous two days into practice.

On the afternoon of Day 3 you will complete Open Water training dives 1 & 2.

With a maximum depth limit of 12 metres your instructor will guide you around the dive site as you become comfortable with your buoyancy, swimming underwater and the open water environment.

  • PADI Open Water Diving Course

You will repeat a few of the skills you mastered the previous day in the swimming pool and of course, there will be time on both of your dives for an underwater tour, exploring the coral reefs and around Koh Tao.

On the final morning of the course you will complete Open Water training dives 3 & 4, this time to a maximum depth of 18 metres.

Expect to see lots of bright corals, colourful tropical fish, moray eels, sting rays and maybe even a hawksbill turtle.

  • PADI Open Water Diving Course

Typical dive sites we visit during Open water training include Mango Bay, Japanese Gardens, Twins, White Rock, Aow Leuk Bay, Lighthouse, Hin Wong Bay and our own in house artificial dive site, Junkyard Reef.

During your final two dives, our in-house underwater film company, Crystal Images, will accompany you to capture your experience on film and then edit the footage into a 25 minute movie which we show at the bar that evening.
