Medical / Insurance
Travelling to a distant part of the world to complete a scuba diving internship is a big step, especially if you've never experienced South East Asia before.
We understand this. We have been living and diving in Koh Tao for many years and will support you during your internship to ensure you have a great time.
It's highly unlikely you have any problems, but if you do need any assistance or some advice we're here to help. We give you our mobile numbers so you can contact us out of hours.
Do I need to take a medical examination to enrol in the Internship?
Yes. Please download the PADI Medical Statement here and review each point. As you will see you need to answer 'Yes' or 'No' to each question.
If you answer 'yes' or are unsure, we would recommend you arrange for a medical examination before you depart your home country, with a specialist diving Physician.
You can either bring a completed Medical Statement with you after being examined a physician at home, or if you have no preconditions you can wait and get this done once you are on Koh Tao.
What Vaccinations Do I Need - Is There Malaria?
Visit your health professional at least 4 to 6 weeks before your trip to check whether you need any vaccinations or other preventive measures.
There is no Malaria in Thailand although there have been cases of Dengue fever so it's wise to use mosquito repellent to avoid those annoying bites.
Medical Clinic & Facilities on Koh Tao
There are several clinics on Koh Tao staffed with nurses, pharmacists and qualified doctors.
There is also an island 'emergency response' unit and an off island speedboat evacuation service for medical emergencies.
Nearby International Hospitals
The nearest Hospitals are based on neighbouring island, Koh Samui. There are three International hospitals & one Government hospital.
Make sure you have adequate travel health insurance and accessible funds to cover the cost of any medical treatment abroad and repatriation.
Your scuba diving Internship program includes a 12 month personal professional level diving insurance through the INDEPTHS Annual IDEC Plus policy.
However, we must point out the INDEPTHS insurance program is primarily a diving accident insurance, with some additional benefits with an Annual Plus policy for slip, trip and other accidental bodily injuries. Download >>>
*Please note that this is NOT a general medical insurance policy and should not be compared with general travel insurance.
Travel Health Insurance
We highly recommend you buy a comprehensive medical & travel insurance policy to cover all aspects of your trip to Thailand.
Recent years have seen a marked improvement in medical care and modern facilities within the region but the cost of western style medical attention is expensive.
As the usual scuba diving policies do not cover all accident and illness related claims we advise all travelers and divers to hold a medical insurance policy in addition to their INDEPTHS cover.
